Celebrating Black History Month
February 27, 2023
Terrace View Gardens celebrated Black History Month by memorializing the many achievements and contributions that African Americans have had, and continue to have, to our history and culture. This month, we honored black history heroes who have been influential in the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout the U.S.
We had the pleasure of welcoming Danyale Marshal from the Cincinnati Sector of the National Council of Negro Women into our building to speak to our residents. We enjoyed hearing many stories about the history of Cincinnati. She shared how the organization was established and how it has and continues to support the basic liberties of African American women, both politically and economically.
The National Council for Negro Women (NCNW) is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, with a mission to advance the opportunities and the quality of life for African American women, their families and communities. Mary Bethune was a prominent teacher and governmental analyst. She recognized the need for a national organization to capture the strength of African-American women.
The NCNW is a charitable agency with women on their committee who push harder for black women's economic and political success. Within the US and Africa, NCNW carries out its purpose via study, lobbying and regional and community-based programs and initiatives. The national offices are situated on Pennsylvania Avenue, between both the White House and the United States Capitol, in Washington D.C., and serve as a primary source in the planning process. The group was founded shortly after World War I. Bethune's vision has a reach of approximately four million women, thanks to many nationwide affiliation groups and far greater than 200 society divisions.
We'd like to thank the NCNW for giving us the opportunity to hear about the mission and history of their organization. We are passionate about supporting their organization and initiatives for African American women nationwide.
